Default painting valve covers - help

well, i decided that its time to paint the valve covers. i am thinking of doing it this weekend, and i allready know what prep work i need to do and what paint to buy, and how to remove the valve covers. the only question i need answered is; is it a gasket under there or are the covers sealed with silicone sealant? if its a gasket thats great, but if its sealant, i need to know so i can buy some before this weekend comes.

and ive got the color choices narrowed down to gloss or flat black - or - dark or traditional ford blue. opinions on the color would be helpful too.

thanks, Tony

don't know the gasket question, but i'm voting gloss black since you already have the black theme goin. unless you're going to use blue as an accent color in other place on the car... then i'd go tradition Ford blue.

Go read TacoBill's writeup on installing chrome cam covers... One of the PICS shows the rubber O ring style gasket....

i just painted mine this past weekend...there is a rubber seal that can be reused, and your gonna need a dab of hi-temp sealer for the front corners, both sides, where the head meets the timing chain cover. just take your time do good prep, sand with 4 or 500 grit paper, be sure to prime, and lots of thin coates, here is a pic of mine

You can't go wrong with Taco Bill's instructions. Just take your time. This is not a job you can rush thru. The only thing I would add is that I used the oven to bake mine. Mine are Ford blue. Prepped covers, 3 coats of color, 2 coats of clear. As soon as covers are dry enough to pick up underneath - Preheat oven to 200 degrees - then turn off - place cover inside for 30 minutes. Really did a good job of curing paint. did not have to worry about finger prints in paint when reinstalling.

Make sure you don't over torque bolts when reinstalling. 7 in pounds not ft pounds.
Good Luck!!
