Hurst Shifter
From what i read, it is common for a Hurst shifter to rattle. Some people's rattle, some people's don't. Thankfully i was able to fix mine by buying screw protecter caps for the shift stops. Deekum obviously had a different type of rattle. i have found that it not uncommon for a rattle to occur in a GT or V6. Also i have read that some corvette owners are experiencing problems of this sort. If you plan to buy one of these, beware that PERFORMANCE > COMFORT in this case; hope to god yours does not rattle!

I'm VERY interested in this issue of the Hurst rattling. As an Engineer, this problem challenges me.. when I come up with ways of solving it, I'm pleased, but even more rewarding is being able to share it with the Mustang community and know I helped someone. So if I come off as a wise a** please know it's not intentional. I'm just trying to "poll" as many people with rattling Hurst S197 models & gain a complete understanding of what's causing it. Thanks for adding your experience to mine.
Deekum, No offense meant! Based on the way you write, I truly believed Engilsh isn't your first language & was trying to be friendly and helpful. My apologies.

My Hurst rattled for my GT. There's play in the spherical bearing. Adding some weapons oil to it fixed it, as it provided a cushion between the parts. I think the problem is just sloppy tolerances. If they tightened them up just the tiniest bit, I think it'd be golden. I haven't ripped it apart, but I'm guessing that's the only real solution.
So the debate continues... I am still churning over which shifter to buy and seems like everytime I read another related thread, many positive comments... but always comments about the rattle. I love the look of the hurst as reminds me of the old days in my early years of muscle cars, but also want something that is crisp and tight. Leaning towards the Pro5.0 now as that would allow for the Hurst handle/look as well.

don't mean to high-jack the thread, but which shift boot trim plate do you have deekum1627? Is that the Ford Bullitt one? If so, what's the leather like? Any "nicer" than that leather look alike one thatcomes in the car?
mine came with the iup im not sure if the bullit uses the same one but i like it

MGW definitely does (click on T5 when ordering) I would have bought the MGW if I KNEW they had one for the V6!
Kotobuki is right, the rattle comes from the "spherical bearing" as he put it.. I've been referring to that as the "ball/socket" = same thing. He was lucky the spray-on lubricant fixed his.. I fixed mine by using a 1" long section of flex tubing from Home Depot (1 9/16" OD, 1 3/16" ID) - see pics below:

To use my solution, simply remove the linkage from the Hurst & take out the plastic bushings from the end of the shifter & slip the hose over it, replace the bushings & re-connect the linkage. This effectively creates a vibration dampener because the flex hose act like a spring keeping a mild pressure between the ball/socket and the linkage. This kills most of the vibration from the linkage and the pressure on the ball/socket stops it from rattling. Costs almost nothing too!
The result is the shifter feels tight and precise, and QUIET! Any questions? I'm happy to help...
