As some of you probably know, I had FRPP hot rod cams installed in the car yesterday. The idle is all over the place, up down up down and it dies completely sometimes. Once the idle levels out it idles ok, but really surges around until it stabilizes. I'm putting the car back in the shop on monday but figured I would look at some things this weekend. Any ideas what I should look for? I plan to clean the TB and IAC well and re-check all the connections. I tried to get in touch with Doug at Bama today for another tune, but couldn't reach him. I don't know if it's tune related or something they screwed up/reconnected wrong. I should have just done the install myself...

When I got the car back home I noticed they had left the CAI -> throttle body clamp really loose. shoddy. guess they were in a hurry to finish it up and forgot to clamp it back down. I don't think those guys will be working on my car again once they correct the problems this time.

 

in one sense, it's good that you are bringing
this issue to the attention of the community.
people should not do cams, unless they have
a real good tuner at their disposal, or things
like this could make life miserable for awhile.

not all tuners can tune these cams yet, it's just to
early and not enough data has been collected and
shared between tuners.

Rubrignitz i think things will work out fine in
the end, but this is a good lesson for folks
who want to put these in over a weekend and then
start driving to work on a cold monday morning

now im just thinking of going with a differnt cam but i really want the FRPP idle /sigh my freind sayed his car is fine i havent heard it in person yet so idk keep us updated =]
+1 bama has poor service but good tunes sometimes...

 

these cams are tricky to tune.. make sure your tuner knows what he is doing or this is what happends. My friends car would die whenever he pushed the clutch in because it was tuned wrong.

 

these cams have idle isssues. So i would for sure recommend a custom tune for best results. Not all cars are alike.

 

Their is a guy on mustang source forums by the name of tribal..I think that is his name...he had a lot of idle issues. I know he had the cams before anyone on this forum and he got it worked out. I had an idle issue but it was very brief. The car would not necessarily surge up and down but it would drop really low and sometimes die when I pushed the clutch in while coming to a stop. Some times it would die and other times it would not. I called my tuner and told him what it was doing and he adjusted the tune and it has had no problems since.

 

+111111 Exactly. This is the problem a lot of tuners are running into that havent got to really tune these cams yet. Once all the tuners really start to figure all of this out im sure word of mouth will go around and we will see lots and lots of tuning idle issues with cams.

 

Isn't this particular to the FRPP cam? Brenspeed and two other highly reputable shops I've talked to heavily push Thumpr's over FRPP and have no issues with thumpr. Hmmm...

I sit here, read, and re-read these posts. Then stare at a dyno chart I got from here. I try and convince myself that I won't care that a Thumpr cam produces less power than stock below 3000 rpm.

 

no its not particular with frpp cams. I know for sure that comp cams have idle issues unless you get a tune.
