Oiling the underside of their car?

My dad used to spray linseed oil every year on the bottom side of his 76 Jeep J-10 pickup. Those trucks used to rust if you looked at them wrong. He sold his in 1996 and it still looked pretty good.
On his 96 Ram he has now, he has the electronic rust protector. It's doesn't prevent rust, it just slows down its development. He has had to fix a few rust spots but nothing major.

Just undercoat it. Do it yourself because that is one thing you know people wont do right. Wash the car and then bring it home and lift it and wash the underside really well and let it dry over night. then spray away. Pull off all the heat shields and drive shaft, exhaust is a good idea or you'll be smelling something for a while... just do a really good job. Im from Alberta CANADA and yes salt sucks but this is the best protection.

thats an old time trick to do when the cars normally rusted away in 5 years. Its not needed anymore. When was the last tiem you have heard of a car having rust issues when its kept normally clean after a snow storm? My 02 everyday driver is every bit as nice if not nicer then the F250 you oil and its never been oiled and is driven in NE salt roads...
its kinda like doing a 'simonize' job to your car. It was state of the art some time ago but there are better way today.

I agree with the majority........what a disgusting mess. Where do you park in your vehicle for the week of this being a nasty mess? I, personally wouldn't park it in my garage for a messy floor. I wouldn't park it in the driveway for the same reason and the home owner association doesn't like oil spots. The city and home owner association doesn't like the spots in the street.

yeah i feel like crying everytime i'm under my car. It's my only car and i live in jersey and here they drop as much salt as there was snow...
My rear end looks a lil rusted up after 2 winters but nothing major. when i drive through salty roads i get home and hose the bottom as much as possible. It's wet but at least some of the salt washes off.
Now oiling is not an option for me. i have a brand new driveway and parking on the street might mean it not being there in the morning.
Plus! its a future excuse for a major restoration project!

This is what we use, Dinitrol
http://dinitrol.com/index.php?id=52&L=1
There is Corrosion Protection and Underbody Protection products available.
It takes time to do it properly. fFirst you need to wash the car well (underbody also), then let it dry over night, second day you spray the protection to doors, hood, body and underbody & wheel wells and let it dry over night and you are done.

http://www.aircraftcorrosioncontrol.com This is what we use on our aircraft, and I use it on my car. It also displaces water that may be deep inside crevices, and is also used to keep electrical components corrosion free. A little of it goes a long way, and there is minimal mess.
