Default Camshaft Sensor Question!

Guys, I need some input here. I'm now looking at a cherry 1998 Mustang V6 with Auto transmission. The guy selling the car had a diagnostic test run for a CEL. The code was P0340 "Cam sensor code set by RF signal from alternator". The car is immaculate and I'm wondering how involved is changing the Cam sensor? I'm pretty good with tools so how involved and any links to a .pdf of this would be greatly appreciated.

Easy enough for a DIY'er?

The guys selling the car said the Oil pressure gauge is oscillating irratically, the CEL came on and he had the diagnostic run. Sound legit?

Section 03-14: Engine Controls, Electronic 1998 Mustang Workshop Manual
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Procedure revision date: 03/16/1998

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
3.8L Engine

The camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) (12126) is a single Hall effect magnetic switch activated by a single vane which is driven by the camshaft (6250) .

The camshaft position sensor provides camshaft position information which is used by the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) for fuel control.

Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
3.8L Engine

SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED Description Tool Number
Syncro Positioning Tool 303-562 (T96T-12200-A)

Removal

Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) . Refer to Section 14-01.

Disconnect fuel charging wiring (9D930) from camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) (12126) .

Remove camshaft position sensor retaining screws and camshaft position sensor from camshaft position sensor housing.

If removing the synchronizer assembly from the engine front cover (6019) , proceed with Removal Step 5. If the synchronizer assembly is not being removed, proceed to Installation Step 6.

CAUTION: Before proceeding, set cylinder No. 1 cylinder to Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke. Then note the position of the camshaft position sensor electrical connector. The installation procedure requires that the connector be located in the same position.

Remove retaining bolt and hold-down clamp (12270) .

NOTE: The oil pump intermediate shaft (6A618) should be removed with the synchronizer assembly.

Remove the synchronizer assembly from engine front cover .

Installation

CAUTION: Syncro Positioning Tool 303-562 (T96T-12200-A) must be obtained prior to installation of the replacement camshaft position sensor . Failure to follow this procedure will result in improper camshaft position sensor alignment. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage.

Attach Syncro Positioning Tool 303-562 (T96T-12200-A) on synchronizer assembly and turn it clockwise until tool boss engages notch in synchronizer assembly. The cover tool should be square and in contact with entire top surface of camshaft position sensor housing.

Transfer oil pump intermediate shaft from old synchronizer assembly to replacement synchronizer assembly.

Install camshaft position sensor housing so that drive gear engagement occurs when arrow on locator tool is pointed as shown in the illustration. This step will locate camshaft position sensor electrical connector in the pre-removal position.

Rotate Syncro Positioning Tool 303-562 (T96T-12200-A) slightly clockwise. This will engage oil pump intermediate shaft . Push downward, adjusting Syncro Positioning Tool 303-562 (T96T-12200-A) until the Syncro Gear engages the camshaft gear.

Install hold-down clamp and retaining bolt and tighten bolt to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft).

Remove Syncro Positioning Tool 303-562 (T96T-12200-A).

CAUTION: If camshaft position sensor electrical connector is not positioned properly, DO NOT reposition the connector by rotating the camshaft position sensor housing. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. Remove the camshaft position sensor housing and repeat installation procedure, beginning with Step 1.

Install camshaft position sensor . Tighten screws to 4.5-7.9 Nm (40-69 lb-in).

Connect fuel charging wiring connector to camshaft position sensor .

Connect battery ground cable . Refer to Section 14-01.

2 quick questions:

1. Which cylinder on a 1998 V6 is #1?

2. What size bolt is on the crank holding the harmonic balancer on? I need to know this so I can turn the motor over to get #1 pistion at TDC.

Thanks again.
