More than likely it was the door switch causing the problem. I had the same problem with my Ford F250 Super Duty. The problem was in the door switch. I sprayed some WD 40 in the door latch and it solved the problem. This problem is fairly common on the F 250s. I am sure the Mustang probably uses the same type switch.
