gear install...
yeah, showed it to them this morning, putting some miles on it per there request before I bring it back, if it gets much better, so I'm not hearing it over other things I will go back. In comparison to the way it came, I would describe the whole rear end as feeling sloppy on anything but hard acceleration or hard engine breaking. Although even my "hard" isnt that hard as I havent been able to get on it yet, cause I'm trying to honor there break in time request.

I got the miles they wanted on it in one day... lol, just used it for work where I have to go 30 miles in X direction, then from there 30 miles in Y then 30 miles in Z all with a few hours of work inbetween. So just took highways, set cruise at 65 and didnt abuse it on on or off ramps.brining it back in like 5 minutes and handing it to them.
Geez... What the tech said would worry me...
He didn't keep track of the shims? If they just used the stock shims with the new gears there could be problems. The backlash should barely be visible. It shouldn't look like 1/8"
The 'paint' they put on? WTF...
I did my own gear install. 4.10s. The marking paint washes right off with a bit of gear oil. It's not going to cause noise.
Do you have any suspension mods? Upper or lower control arms?
Aftermarket control arms will cause a bit more noise to be transmitted up through the body so you would hear more of what's going on in the rearend...
I've got control arms with half poly, half rod end joints so I hear everything going on in the gears. They're very quiet. There's a very slight noise at a certain MPH. I wouldn't call it a whine though, it's more like a slight buzz and only happens when I'm just barely touching the gas pedal. Halfway between accel and decel... It's like some kind of resonant frequency...
Good luck.

So I brought it in this morning, the tech went for a ride with me, said he hears what I'm talking about, was gonna take it in. The guy doing the schedualing and stuff that kinda runs the show stepped in and asked me to put another 150 miles on it. The tech said it could be the paint he put on to check the meshing of the gears.
I looked up the backlash spec and it looked like .008-.015 but when the tech had shown me he had just checked for back lash, he showed me by pushing up and down on the gear what looked to be about 1/8" Also, when I asked him how much shim it ended up needing the response was, "oh, I didnt really keep track of the shims" well see if the extra 150 miles helps it. I wouldnt put money on it.

hope if it is their problem they fix it right away and let you enjoy the gears without thinking so much about the whine. good thing my mechanic does only this type of stuff for a living so he knew what he was doing. like joe said, if you have a loud exhaust, or just blast the radio you'll never know its there. i can barely hear my girlfriend yapping all the time cause my exhaust is so loud haha jk
if you can hear them over both of those then there is probably something wrong with the gear install.. good luck with that. sucks to be excited about a mod then not be happy about it once it's done for some reason...
