I work in the industry...if you want $500.00 of paint work, you'll get it.
Finding a good bodyman is as good as if not better than finding a good mechanic.
If you can look at the paint or at the body work and find where the work has been done, it ain't been done good enough...
Nuff said...
how much is a typical painted stipe job

being a former prep guy from 20+ years ago in a MAACO shop let me tell you the issues I seen compared to other body shops. First of all consider MAACO the k-mart of body shops. yes you can find some decent clothes there and heck even a good price, but its not the top tier of the clothing line and you get what you pay for. MAACO uses enamel based paints of the lower quality. MAACO is not known for their prep time. Heck I had a 98 camaro that I was trading in and I had the car repainted to give it the fresh look. Let me tell you the overspray on the trim was horrible. now we can say well yeah that was the one MAACO shop, well the shop I worked at 20+ years ago was famous for the same low quality work. dragging the hose through wet paint leaving marks on cars, horrible prep and post paint work, masking and trim cover deplorable. so do you want to entrust your beautiful s197 with a factory paint job to a fix it quick Tony body shop that will not even line up your stripes correctly? for what...so you can take your car back to them and each time they fix it they make it worse? To me if you are going to have your stripes painted on you are better off paying now, otherwise you WILL pay later. dont risk your $20k+ car to a sub par paint job. but hey, as always its your car and if you feel that they will do a good job then hey go for it....I just say be very very cautious.

the didnt even fix the overspray ? was this just that one Maaco or company practice, I talked to the guy on the phone for about 10 minutes and he said it would talk 2 days and they would fix overspray.

What about the quality of the paint itself

technique is technique is technique....not that im saying maaco is terrible....i would get a car repainted that i was going to trade in, or maybe an old beater car that needed a respray...but not your mustang man.....just my opinion though...its your car.....just some more food for thought....you never see anyone getting in magazines or winning shows with maaco paint work

yeah they did....then they had to replace part of the trim around the window as the solvent used to clean off the overspray and the action of cleaning in faded and caused part of the trim to crack....the paint itself was very very thinly applied in spots.
do I think its company practice...no not per say...however they are required to get em in and get em out quick. spending extra time to make sure the tape is properly masked around certain parts is not there focal point. quality of the paint was sub par but I did not have the car very long before I traded it in for my former stang. I will tell you that something must have come up with the paint job after I traded it in because the dealer called me and asked where I had it painted at a few months after they sold it because the new owners were complaining about the paint chipping off easily (Again due to poor prep time)
of course they will say that they will fix it and of course they will attempt to do it....overspray can be the least of your worries...there is edge feathering which is common when stripes are painted on and not masked correctly..there is seams, clear coat quality...how are you having the stripes done? are they painting them on regardless of seam and done with it or do you want your stripes to not have a seam or an edge?

dont get me wrong, just going to someone else who will charge you double does not guarantee quality work, that is why you have to find someone you can trust or who has a solid reputation. I usually ask the person what other cars they have done, see if they have a book with some customers vehicles and also see if you can see any cars that they customized or did. remember this not a rocker panel or a small spot on your car...this is basically your most visible spots on your car...you really need to investigate whoever you choose to do more than just taking my or others opinions here.....again its your car...dont be hasty in your decision...take your time before deciding.

eeee, well I'm not sure if I understand your question the way it sounded was pretty basic he said they would cover the whole car with tape/paper. Remove the area to be striped and then paint the striped area then apply the clear coat , but after reading what you posted I probably wont do it , The guy said he was also doing a Transam with stripes this week I might try to go down there Monday to see the final result of that car.

lastly that paint chipping sounds like a huge problem didnt they warranty the job

You sound like you're trying to get us to convince you not to go there.... if you're confident that Maaco is going to do a good job, then just go there. It's your car, it's your risk.

You get what you pay for... :-)
