Question Buying a Used 2005 Mustang GT?

Hey guys, I used to come here alot and post ect like 2 years or more ago, but I wanted to come back and ask this question.

I am finally going to to buy a Used 05 GT, but what are things i should look out for when buying this particular year/model/make?

Hopefully I can find a Black one, stock, manual in good condition. any suggestions?

You look for all of the common things you would look for on a used car. Make sure its not modified, a fully stock GT would be your best bet.

Yes there is a few bugs, I am sure somebody here will tell you. I cant remember out of the top of my head. The 05 early 06 had a few bugs since the car was fully re-designed. First year of new models have a few issues. I worked at ford and I remeber 05s had problems with weather insulation, gas tank wouldnt fill, etc. I am sure by know the original owner took care of it though.

Check to make sure your 05 doesn't make a 'clunking' sound when you turn the wheels slowly left and right when going about 5 MPH. If it does, don't worry. There's a TSB for that--it's related to the front springs. It's not a safety issue or anything. It's annoying and costs about 300 bucks for the dealer to fix. I think most 05 owners got this fixed for free under the TSB. But if not, it will cost you. Also 05 manual shift GTs cause a slight 'vibration' in the shifter when in third gear and decelerating. This was something fixed for free under warranty because it's a TSB item. But again it's not a big deal if not fixed--just annoying. OH, yea, and that gas tank thing . . . LOL.

Also the dreaded water leak problem, check underneath the front passenger and driver carpets for rust or mold or anything water related...

My 2005 has never been back to the dealer. No problems at all.

Best to look for low mileage, well maintained car. The stock manual came with 3.55 gears, auto with 3.31. Lots of original GT owners had to beg, borrow or steal to get one of the first S197's. I myself had to call in favors to get my order through when the convertibles were first released, and I was lucky to pay list price and not a market value adjustment. According to what I've found, there were less than 500 Torch Red, GT premium (black leather & top) manual convertibles made in 2005. I like to think the '05's are special.

Don't let the '05 bashers scare you away.

run the vin # thru the ford dealership to see what work has been done

-water leak you MUST check for
-tsb for fuel pump is common

keep in mind with an 05 there probably is no warranty left, so definately get a mechanic to go thru it before you commit.
