Gear install prices and what do I need
Unless you watch every move a mechanic makes working on your car - you don't know who is doing the work on it. The newbie has to learn someday. I know you all are going to say - don't learn on my car, but the truth is if you never seen that they were teaching him you would of never known. JMO....
the shop owner told me he checked all the newb's work and said it was all fine. he said backlash is suppose to be .008-.010 and he said mine was .009. also said gear pattern was right in middle. the way the shop is set up i could not see the back side of the rearend while he was working on it. i do hear a different noise when i let off the throttle as the car slows down and when it get down to 20 mph i feel alittle vibration. i am going to find someone who knows for sure if this is normal. i have an aluminum DS that i want to install but i am going to wait to make sure gears are o.k. first.
I just had a bad gear install done, went to the shop with some info in hand, and they stood behind there work, went to ford got the proper tools, and completely rebuilt my rear end the right way at no extra charge.
The problem was the kid installing said, "I didnt realy keep track of the shim," when I asked him how much shim it needed. When he showed me backlash, he showed me physicaly there was backlash with no tool.... and the sound your describing, I had more pronunced and at higher speed, is usualy improper preload on the bearing (to little.)
So there are the three most important things to do in a install, that require special tools to do, (the only reason I even paid to have it done,) and the kid just kinda through it all in there with a rough idea of what needed to be done, and none of the specifics..... After I voiced my opinions about what areas I belived they did wrong, when they put it back together everthing was good. Only instead of 1/2 a day, it tied my car up for almost 3.
Oh and they chargerd 375 for the gear install.
