I'm running a Red Top series 35 myself. It's close, but it does not rub or hit the hood. The battery height is the same as stock. The difference is that the posts are not recessed as they are on the stock battery. I'm using the factory tray and hold down. I did put a small rubber pad under the battery to lift it ever so slightly to get a snug fit, but have had zero issues so far.

Avoid the YellowTop for starting applications.
Get a 34/78 or a 35 RedTop Optima thats designed for motor starting applications.

Did you not get the one with top and side posts as well?
If so, use the side posts. In an accident, barely clearing
battery posts can contact metal body barts (aluminum hood)
and short out causing it to explode. Battery acid everywhere.
Its not pretty.

For the record, the Optima batteries are gel filled, not flooded acid like a traditional battery.
