Red Top Optima?
Question for you guys...why did you go with the Optima? Back when I had my 5th wheel I needed to replace my batteries for the camper. I got to looking around and you can't avoid seeing the Optima ads. So I bought two yellow tops. Then during the following winter I had those batteries in the laundry room until the next spring. My wife pushed them together with her feet because they were in the way. Pushed the terminals together and destroyed one battery. Then I started to research batteries. What I found out pissed me off that I fell for Optimas claims and the fact they make a good looking battery. At the time a yellow top was about $130. If you need good deep cycle batteries those who know go with Trojan T-105 6 volt golf cart batteries. You buy two batteries and wire them so they give 12 volts. Set up like this the Trojans have 3 1/2 times the capacity of the Optima yellow top and at the time cost $55 each, so $110 for 12 volts. The only possible issue is you may not have the space for two batteries. You'll never find an Optima battery in a real deep cycle application where there is space for the two 6 volts, the performance isn't even close. As for your red top starting application the only reason to blow $160 on an Optima is because you need to be able to roll your car over and need the gell cell, such as some four wheeling operations. But you can get a Sears Die Hard or Interstate battery with the same basic specs as the Optima for less than $100.
No I get it in the morning it had to be ordered...i have been hearing so many different things...it fits, hood hits, hood barely touches, have to modify tray, etc. just wish more people who had them would chime in...i know the yellow top fits fine i know someone with that one.
help guys...........
help guys...........Its not the liquid or gelly acid, its the explosive gasses that
are produced during charging and high discharge rates, like
a dead short up against an aluminum hood, that explode.
I have been mounting them upside down for years in stereo blaster
vans for audio competitions. I used 36 of them in one install alone.
Along with 30 Orion amplifiers and 60 - 12" subs. 36,000 total watts and
5 - 250Amp alternators. 174dBs of glass breaking sound. The windshield
was replaced with 1" thick laminated glass.
Thats where 157dB came from. My old daily driver.....

They will serve snow cones in hell before I buy another Optima battery. I bought one for the fastback and had to have it warrantied 3 times the first year.
The only draw I have is a quartz dash clock and if the car would sit for 3 or 4 weeks the battery would be stone-pony dead and would not take a charge. After 3 times of this I took it back to the parts house and told them to keep it. Then I went to NAPA and got one of their good batteries and it is as reliable as a stone chisel.

For what it's worth, Optima batteries aren't gel cells. They are Absorbed Glass Mat (or AGM) cells. Their trade name for it is "Spiracell". It's a coil of lead mesh and fiberglass. There are no plates to crack or fail.
The electrolyte is liquid, not gel.
