Man, this is one of those topics that just won't go away.
IF you're using the on-board computer to post your MPG numbers, hang it up. And if you are using it, at least post #'s that show your avergae from fill-up to fill-up. In other words, reset it at the punp when you fill-up and don't touch it until the next fill-up. Any other use of the on-board is a waste of everyone's time. Even then, the typical on-board is about 1-2 MPG high. Hand calculation is the only way to go and then average THOSE numbers over the course of a few months, THEN post your numbers.
Even then, % highway vs city, driving style, tire inflation, road terrain and weather conditions will all play into the mix. I even see changes due to ambient temperature and humidity.

I don't think any internal computer from a car is going to be 100% correct. The good thing is it's usually within 1-2 mpg of what it does say. I have a Granatelli CAI and I usually get about 1.5 mpg less than what it reads. So, it's close and gives us a good idea of what we're getting.
I always hand calculate my mileage, every single tank... I keep a running log of each fill-up. :-)
Now that I'm not driving 50 miles of highway each day my mileage has gone down quite a bit. I typically get around 18-19 mpg now, but that's probably about 75% city driving.

not to mention some of us have 5 speeds, so we get better mpg and power anyways. Personally i dont see why the CPU would be very wrong. Its odometer is accurate, and fuel consumption is known, its not like its guessing. a couple mpg is a reasonable error though, so when my car is floating just under 32 mpg on the highway going 60, i would believe 30 no problem.
Well, today my my gas gauge showed just a tad before the last mark (in the past I've been able to run it down past the last mark) and I figured on filling up at the shell next to fashion island in newport beach, ca when my car started to chug. Luckily by the time it died I had enough going to get over the hill and coast down right into the shell station at the bottom lol. Talk about not a second too soon. I reset everything after every fill up, and today when I stopped at shell I had:
288 Miles to the tank
18.6 MPG
15.5 gallons used
I was able to fill up 15.906 gallons according to the reciept.

SteveO, I keep a running tab of every tank of gas mileage too. Varies according to how much city driving I do. Fun to keep up with though.

but i drive 95% in the city... Are you city guys getting better numbers ???
