Default Painted headlight bucket

Has anyone painted their headlight buckets yet? I've been wanting to do this ever since I first saw the 2005 Mustang. I've seen other posts with people talking about it, but I'm wandering if anyone has actually done it yet.

I found these on a roush. I'm wandering how hard it would be to take the headlight bucket apart and have it painted.

I'm also thinking of painting the mirrors body color:

The painted mirrors look alright but I'm not sure if like the painted headlight bucket. I saw another example where someone had paint only the top portion on the mirror. I think that looked a little better than the entire mirror painted.

The one with the upper part of the mirror painted was probably the Steeda Q.

The one that I found where the whole mirror and headlight bucket was painted was the roush.

I am planning on painting the top half of my mirrors and then clear coating the entire thing.

I am also planning on reverse painting my headlight buckets.. that is to say - painting the inside of the grill vents in the buckets red.

The headlight buckets I am not too sure about but the side mirrors need painting on all GT's....in my humble opinion, lol! I am getting mine painted this week as I think its the craziest thing that Ford didnt color code the side mirros as with nearly every other sports car I have ever seen!

Ever since I saw the first photo below I've planned on painting the "buckets" as you call them. If it was a stingray I guess we would call them gills. I think the car begs for it. I just don't know how to get to them.

Does the clear cover come off or do you get to them from the back?

Professor Wizard said "reverse paint" and make the spaces behind the grill vents red which also sounds great. I read in another forum where someone backlit the grill vents with a purple LED light.

On the mirrors I thought the Xenon covers looked OK. I think having them painted and put on over the stock is better so you don't mess up your stock one's. Does that make sense?

Let me know if you ever figure out how to get to them.

Best regards,
Jim

I tried this but did not have very much success.

I bought a set of take off headlights form Steeda for about $170. The clear plastic lens would not come off at all. Someone suggested heating it in an oven. I tried at several different temperatures and for various times but not much success. Finally, I increased the temperature to 140 for 10 minutes and this prooved to be too much, the plastic lenses melted as did the mounting brackets on the buckets.

The interior light grilles were in tack, so I had them painted; however, I am afraid to try it again and waste another $170.

If anyone finds a way to get the covers off effectively, I'll be ready to go.

Meanwhile, I bougth some Plexiglass and I'm gogin to try to see if I can salvage the other buckets by gluing the plexiglass behind the grilles.

I've seen someone do this before check the search and look for it. if i remember correctly the guy did heat up the headlights. i also spoke with CDC, and they said that they will be coming out with painted buckets in the future. As for 05blueGT they have a sonic blue car on there web page with the painted buckets.
