spark knock?????
What is spark knock? I need info to help out some one at my work, he has a black 05 GT mustang 5 speed with 54K miles and we where pulling up his steep *** drive way, I don’t think he was giving it enough gas, the car started sputtering and I think knocking (running rought) so he rolled back and turned the car off and then he just stared it back up and it was running ok so what do u all think? I have heard of spark knock but don’t know what it is or if it was spark knocking.
Thanks

spark knock it when the fuel is ignited too early on the compression stroke. usually cause by excessive cylinder temps due to too much timing, a lean condition, and too low octane fuel. but what you are describing sounds like the fuel pump tsb ford has for hesitation stumble after long cruise. running out of fuel can also cause spark knock.
description of tsb
Some 2005-2006 Mustangs may exhibit a hesitation on acceleration after a long cruise. After coming to a stop from a highway type cruise, some vehicles may experience a hesitation when the customer begins to accelerate. Air bubbles can form around the fuel pump during a long cruise and be ingested into the pump on acceleration causing a hesitation.

That doesn't quite sound symptomatic of the fuel pump TSB. My g/f had the TSB issue and it was a definite hesitation on acceleration, not a sputtering or shaking. It almost seems like it started when you began pulling up his "steep ***" driveway which makes me begin thinking either water in the tank or low fuel (not sure where the pick-up is in our tanks; front, rear or mid). If that's ONLY when that happens then I'd rule out the TSB.

It poor low octain fuel being pre-ignited by a
hot spotand then the spark ignited the rest of
the fuel and the explosion wave fronts collide.
The result is a knocking sound. Very, very destructive.
Its caused from improper timing and/or low
octain fuel. The engine has a knock sensor
and logic in the PCM to adjust the timing
when knock occures. It usually happens
under a full load going up a hill at 3/4 to
full throttle.
I dont think you were hearing knocking.
He was lugging the engine and was not
giving it enough gas. Press the gas down
and dont baby it up the driveway.
