The capless feature was designed also for anti-theft that only a proper sized nozzle could go in or the special funnel in the trunk. The system used on the door was chosen because it was more relaible than the cable pull inside the car. if anyone has had a japanese car that is more than 10 years old can tell you, when that cable snaps and it does it is a royal pain in the but to open you fuel door. When the spring in the push door fails it either stays partially open or can be opened with a long fingernail.
