Default Mustang GT...shifting never consistent

Hi all. I have an '05 GT, 5-speed. It seems it is never consistent you shifting gears or starting from a dead stop. A lot of times the car jerks and other times it is smooth as butter. I have driven numerous 5-speeds and even some 18-wheelers in my day and none of them have behaved like the Mustang. Sometimes it makes me wish I had the automatic. Has anyone else had this problem? Would a tune take care of it, or is it the drive by wire system that causes this?

Thanks

if you weren't experienced w/ 5-spd's, I would have just said it was poor shifting. not sure what the problem could be tho

I have the same issue. Sometimes smooth as butter sometimes it just seems like it drops......

Can't tell if its the car or something in my shift tecnique (is that spelled right?).

I know one thing for sure it's worse than it should be because I think about it all the time and pay to much attention to it. Your not alone!

Hey Guys,

I recently bought my Mustang 2008 GT Manual and I was immediately Disgusted with the shifting.

I did some research on this forum and equipped an MGW aftermarket shifter (I'm happy with it but there are other brands that are quality products as well), Granatelli Motorsports Polyurethane Motor Mounts (Steeda Makes them and UPR does too, I think), and the CHE K Member Brace with Torque limiters.

Total $600 (300 for the shifter, 150 mounts, 150 K member brace).

This combination changed the veicle from the worst shifting 5 speed I've ever owned into one of the best.

I would suggest the shifter and the motor mounts before the k member brace, but I would suggest all three if you have the funds available.

Just my .02 as to what fixed the car's shifting for me.

I've had lots of Jeeps with 5 gears. No power = No fun.

This one is SWEET! Yeah, it's not stupid easy to shift, you need to pay attention... However... until recently it was "snick" "snick" smooth on shifts.... Too many 1 - 2 gear speed shifts and the synchronizers ain't as happy as they used to be... but it's still easy to lay 20 feet of second gear rubber

It's not a 4 cylinder econo box. It's a 300 pony fun car. Clutch is a little grabby. Big deal! Do some 3 grand hole shots and just enjoy what happens next!

YES!! Finally others with the same problem.

It seems like some people have really great luck with theirs and others have...well...our luck. It's interesting that you used the phrase, "sometimes it just seems like it drops" because that's exactly how I would describe it. You feel like you use the same pedal pressure as the last take-off, but the car basically falls flat on it's face. Next time you'll over-rev it.

Out of curiosity, do you guys drive with the A/C on a lot, or the defrost setting? I find this problem to consistently be a whole lot worse when the A/C's on.

I agree. My mustang is one of the few cars I've owned that you have to pay close attention to while shifting. I had a tune for a while but got sick of what I called the Herkey Jerkeys. I would start out in first and if you didn't give just the right amount of throttle the car would buck back and forth really bad. It's better now that I returned to stock. I have an 07 and my friend has an on 09. His entire drive experience is different than mine. His car shifts smooth through every gear with no driveline vibration.

Same here. But my Stang isn't my DD and I'm sure it's me. I haven't driven a stick full-time for over 18 years. I often find myself thinking too hard about it and that's when I shift like an newbie. But when I'm "into" the drive and my mind is in automatic (no pun intended) she's smooth as silk.
