If your mirrors are lighting up when you hit the brakes, you most likely currently have them connected to the REAR turn signal wires which are coded: left side wire = light blue/orange and the right side = red/white, correct?

No. The wires you are looking for are coded for the front signals. they are: Left front turn is Grey/black and right front turn is Dk Blue/Orange

RIGHT FRONT DarkBlue/Orange
LEFT FRONT Grey/Black
Connector C2280D at the Smart Junction Box.
Same connector as the wrong wires you tapped into.
