I dont know what happens or why, but if my key is on, I have fewer problems filling it. I had never paid attention to it until I read this thread, but when it kicks the pump off, I turn the key on while the guy fills the car so I can see how full it is, and it doesn't shut off again.

Before O Riley sidetracked us, this caught my attention. Since then I have started paying attention to this everytime I fill the car up and have not had any problems. If I dont have the key on, then my car is a PITA to fill up.

Someone mentioned "fuel recovery mode" for the guage, what is that? I have not noticed anything different at all except my car takes gas easier.

There are a few work-arounds that work and in various combinations:
  • Slow down fuel delivery as slow as possible, then speed up to find where it begins to kick off.
  • Pull the pump nozzle out of the filler tube about half-way
  • turn the pump handle 45, 90 sometimes even 180 degrees
  • different pumps have different sensitivities. Find a pump that isn't so persnickity.
  • Stand on your head and spit nickles
Next time, try the search feature.
I havn't run into this issue with my 08. But my 97 probe had that issue with about 5% of the gas stations. I blamed it on the dysfuctional nozzle and didn't buy gas at places which gave me trouble.

This will tell you EVERYTHING you EVER wanted to know about the Insturment Cluster and its operation.
It will describe the FOUR modes of operation of the Fuel Guage.
