Default Programming a Flip Key

I purchased a flip key today. I got the key cut. The instructions for programming this unit have two parts, one for the key programming and one for the RKE programming. This is how I programmed by PAT keys and RKE FOB for my 2005 F150 and 2006 Escape. The 2010 Ford owners manual only states one programming method is needed for the one piece key/FOB. Using the 2010 owners manual method I got the key programmed and it starts the car, but the RKE portion of the flip key does not work. I tried the older method to program the RKE after the Ford owners manual method did not work, but the RKE still does not work. In the older your method, you turn the ignition from off to on 8 times and then press one the the RKE FOB buttons, the doors will lock after the 8th turn of the key. On my 2010 Mustang the doors did not lock. The locking of the doors is the indication that the car is in the programming mode. Is there another way to program the RKE?

Sorry I don't have any information to help you with the problem but can you tell us more about the flip key you purchased? Is it an OEM Ford part? What is the part number and cost? A friend at work has a flip key for her Mazda and I think it's the coolest thing ever.

How about a photo? Thanks!

Nothing really, it just flips out Chuck Norris style (and looks more high tech)

That's the correct picture. I bought it on ebay. It is not a Ford item.
I don't like the IKT because it is too long to kept in my pants pocket with my other keys. In the two weeks I have had my '10 the key has 'stabbed' my leg numerous times. I can see where this key will be tearing a hole in my pocket in the future. This IKT is a poor design at best. Obviously a cost cutting measure. When Ford turned on their light bulb for this idea the bulb probably failed, not one of their better ideas IMO. In the past I would leave the keys in my vehicle, hidden of course, and only take the FOB with me, much more convenient and practical to me. I also want to program just a FOB and that I'll keep with me.

That's where I got the photos, eBay. I noticed the listing said Taiwan but it seems crazy they can do knock off key fobs.

How is the fit and finish? Does it feel OEM?

Found these instructions on another forum...

PATs (Security) Key Programming
**You must have two original keys to perform this procedure. If you only have one key, you WILL have to take it to the dealer to get it programmed**
  1. Insert an existing programmed key into the ignition.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON (RUN) and wait for the red security light to turn off. Do not leave the key in the ON position longer than 10 seconds, soon as the light turns off should be good enough. Turn key back to OFF.
  3. Remove the key and, between 3 and 10 seconds, insert a second programmed key and turn it to ON (RUN) and again wait for the security light to turn off. Do not leave the key in the ON position longer than 10 seconds, soon as the light turns off should be good enough. Remove the key.
  4. Insert the unprogrammed key before TWENTY seconds have elapsed and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it the ON position for at least 3 seconds and turn back to OFF.
  5. The security light will light up for THREE seconds to indicate that the new key has been successfully programmed. Attempt to start your car. If it doesn't start try again.
  6. To program additional keys, repeat steps 1 through 5

Remote Entry Key Programming
How to reprogram your remote entry transmitters
You must have all remote entry transmitters (maximum of six) available before beginning this procedure.
Note: Ensure the brake pedal is not depressed during this sequence.

To reprogram the remote entry transmitters:

  1. Ensure the vehicle is electronically unlocked.
  2. Put the unprogrammed key in the ignition.
  3. Cycle eight times rapidly (within 10 seconds) between the 1 (OFF/LOCK) position and 3 (ON). This is where I had the most difficulty. Your movement must be very fast otherwise you're going to be too slow and it'll never work. It says you have 10 seconds but it feels like even less. Note: the eighth turn must end in the 3 (ON) position. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming mode has been activated.
  4. Within 20 seconds press any button on each of your remote entry transmitter. You should have three keys total (2 pre-programmed keys, 1 flip key). Press one button from each key to ensure all three will still have working remote functionality. Note: If more than 20 seconds have passed, you will need to start the procedure over again. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that this remote entry transmitter has been programmed.
  5. Repeat Step 4 to program each additional remote entry transmitter.
  6. Turn the ignition to the 1 (OFF/LOCK) position after you have finished programming all of the remote entry transmitters. Note: After 20 seconds, you will automatically exit the programming mode. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming mode has been exited.

The PATS key programming is what the owners manual states to do. This programming per the owners manual is also to program the RKE buttons as well. The OM does not give additional programming steps to program just a RKE FOB. I tried the FOB programming steps as you stated but the car doors did not lock/unlock and the RKE buttons were not activated. I assume there is a new programming method for doing just a RKE FOB that the dealer will know about. I am headed to the dealer this afternoon after my visit to the local junkyard for some underhood and glovebox lights.
