the axle is always a safe point. you can lift it from the center pumpkin to lift the whole rear at once then you can put the jack stands under where the springs are like what's already been mentioned. just watch out for the rear diff cover and don't let the lift catch that or you could mess something up.
Be careful with lifting from the pumpkin. It is not rated to lift the car's weight. There was a guy I heard of who cracked his pumpkin at the axle tube by lifting there. A very expensive repair!
... on my car, i do it but i put a block of wood on the end of my jack so the wood bends and splits, not my differential housing.
I used to do the wood thing too... but wood only holds up so long.
I welded a bolt to the pad, drilled a hole through a hockypuck and it works awesome! The hockypuck is hard rubber, but conforms well to whatever it makes contact with. No slipage at all, even with oil / grease is around.
I did peal my cover off the 8.8 when I had nothing on the jack pad My guess is this is the ONLY reason they say not to lift by the pumpkin.
The 8.8 is a strong axle. If you fubar the housing from lifting it, they wouldn't hold up to any level of abuse. I do a lot of Jeepin. People use 8.8s all the time (from Exploders). Hanging 35" tires on them and slaming them on rocks. A little lifting ain't squat.
