clutches typically don't grind but if it's not disengaging fully when you try to shift then it'll cause your tranny to grind.

typically when a clutch is going the most noticeable sign it that it won't hold the power. so if you have it in gear with the clutch fully engaged if you floor it and it doesn't hold then you have a problem.

if it holds the power but you have trouble going in and out of gear it could be something else. on my S2000 a common issue was needing to bleed the clutch valve thingy or you would have trouble fully disengaging the clutch to shift gears.

in my ford explorer my springs went bad in my clutch and had to be replaced. i could feel and hear weird noises with the clutch pedal when I pushed it down with my foot. I never heard any grinding noises though.

Holy cow, it sounds like you need to get to a different dealer...
Are they now going to tear into it again to try to fix it on their dime?? I sure hope so...
I would seriously consider getting help from a dealership that does diagnostic work before blindly replacing parts, but that just my opinion.

They are full of spit. When a clutch goes bad, it will start slippin'. You can test this by going down the road in one of the higher gears, about mid-RPM and punch the gas-if the engine speeds up and the car don't, it's the clutch. Bad clutch will not cause you to grind going into gear. now if you have a pilot bearing going bad, or it was damaged when they worked on the car before, that will cause the clutch to never fully disengage, casuing the grinding (it causes the tranny input shaft to spin with the flywheel) OR , if there is an issue with the clutch hydraulics (like if they didn't bleed the hydraulics when they worked on it), that will also cause the issue you describe. But not the clutch.
But HOLY COW, $2000.00 !! you are joking, right? Because that is way way overpriced for a clutch job. All clutch parts plus flywheel can be bought for less than $300.00 easy. That 2,000 is just an outright ripoff.
Check anywhere - that price is pure BS.
They are just trying to make you pay for the repair one way or another...

it's probably more in labor than in parts, that's how they got to $2,000.

labor should be about 10 hours flat rate or less @ $95 per hour plus parts. Do the math., They are ripping you off at $2000.
