Default Oil change intervals

What's your opinion?

Every 5k with Motorcraft semi synth

or

Every 10k with Royal Purple, Amsoil, Mobil 1 etc...

Seems to me that fresher oil more often would be better. 2 semi synth changes = 1 Royal Purple change so # isnt an issue. Any hard data out there that backs up either scenario?

It's not THAT black and white since it depends on how you drive, your environmental and road conditions, etc. But here's my rules of thumb after 37 years of doing my own oil changes on numerous vehicles and being involved in industrial facility oil analysis:
  • Dino oil: every 3,000-3,500 miles or every 6 months, whichever comes first
  • Synthetic Blend: every 5,000-7,500 miles or every 6 months, whichever comes first
  • Full Synthetic: every 7,000-10,000+ miles (I could easily consider going to 15,000 miles if I decided to perform oil analysis) or once per year, whichever comes first
You're going to get many differing opinions. Do what you're comfortable with.

My SUV tow vehicle uses M1 EP and M1 filter at 8,000 -10,000 mile intervals.
My '07 GT uses Amsoil 0W20 and Amsoil Ea filter at 8,000-10,000 mile intervals.
My g/f's '06 V6 Pony uses Motorcraft synthetic Blend and Motorcraft filter at 5,000 mile intervals (she does a lot of city style driving)

None of my dozen or more vehicles EVER burned or used oil or had compression issues and ran great up to or beyond 200,000 miles.

Thanks Rick. I think I'd prefer the semi synth every 5k. Thats what I do for my F150 and it works out fine.

Just wondering what others thought.

About to change out my Amsoil 5w20 XL with Amsoil 0w20. After 6000 miles it's still golden

I have 10,700 miles on my car, that I bought the first week of November '09. I am currently using the motorcraft semi-synthetic at 5000 mile intervals, just did my second oil change the other day. But am considering either royal purple or amsoil, but because of the extreem amount of miles and conditions what intervals are safe?

My lube bay guys think I'm crazy, my ride gets new Synthetic at least every 1000km.. But I rarely drive the thing anywhere except to track days, so it's not like the oil isn't being abused. I get to monitor the motor condition by the state of the oil.
The oil never gets remotely dirty so that makes it easy for me to notice when something's awry.

Probably wasting money here, but mine gets full Royal Purple treatment every 3k. Im not worried about it though because I get an awesome discount at work and peace of mind.
