Exclamation Cam Noise or Something Wrong? Please Help!

I brought my car into the dealership today to ask them about
a noise.

The tech got in my car and instead of the noise I was concerned about he pointed out another noise.
It is a knocking noise coming from the engine. I thought it was the cams I had installed recently and it was a normal sound.

The tech said it was not and got my car on the lift.
He thought the sound was coming from my tranny and said he did not know for sure what was wrong but it might be a bearing.
He even used a tool that looked like a stethoscope with a pen on the end and stuck it in a hole that was to the tranny under the car.
He wants to look inside the transmission tomorrow!

So for you people with Hot Rod Cams...
Do you have this noise or not? Am I looking at something that is NOT normal that I need to get checked out or is a dealership trying to rake in some money?

I made two videos of the noise.
OH ALSO.... the noise STOPS when I push the clutch in.
It also does NOT make the noise when my car is in motion.
Only when the car is not moving. Sometimes the knocking stops and then continues.
NOTE THE SECOND VIDEO HAS SOME WIND WHEN I AM IN THE CAR CLOSE TO THE END OF THE VIDEO.. THAT PART IS JUST WIND.

ahh, get the camera away from the vent. You have a definate mechanical knock of some sort that should not be there. Try snapping a video from under the rear muffler area at idle as well. Or while its idling and making that sound, I put my toe on the end of the muffler and push in a little, lift it up, move it around, see if is back there or not.

Definetely not normal- I think the key to your description is that the noise goes away with clutch in - it could possibly be the throw-out bearing. If it was internal engine, the clutch would not make a difference

The guy at the dealership mentioned he thought it was a bearing in the tranny.
Is that what the throw out bearing is? A bearing in the tranny?

The knocking is DEFINITELY coming from the area of the engine or tranny.
When the car was not lifted it sounded as if it was from the engine and that is why I thought it was just normal cam sound.

When he lifted the car you could hear it near the transmission and he stuck a tool
inside the hole of the tranny to listen to the sound.

So we all think its a bearing in the tranny?

I swear I am having the WORST LUCK lately.
First the vibration from the dash.... now this.
And all after I saved for years and just spent freakin THOUSANDS to get my mods done.
If this is the case... what am I looking at as far as cost to get this thing fixed do you think?

Again JD... this sound is NOT the same sound that I was describing in the dash vibration thread you read.

Smoke- The throw-out bearing is what your pressing up against when you push the clutch in- it rides on the clutch itself and the clutch fork. you do have to pull the trans. but do not! have to go inside the transmission. it is inside the bell housing with the clutch

Hrmmm.... the install shop that did my gears etc.. said they thought my clutch was acting funny....
I myself have not noticed it.

Maybe this is another sign?

you know, I was thinking a remote possibility of the other sound you were having was clutch chatter, but I ruled it out in my thought process with only 50k miles on the car. It can all be related.

They will probably drop your tranny, replace the pilot bearing and the slave cylinder. All the noise might just go away.'

I know you dont want to spend any more money, but now might be the time to sweet talk your dealer into a very cheap install of a aftermarket clutch while there in there.

Maybe I can... it would have to depend on the price of getting all of this done.. that's for sure.

As far as the aftermarket clutch's.
I have no idea what I should go with if I got one or how much they cost lol.

something like
http://www.americanmuscle.com/spec-s...gt-clutch.html

Pretty cheap, more then strong enough for anything your gonna throw at it (even a mild supercharger) and it would only take a few more bolts from where there gonna be. They would probably want to resurface your flywheel too, but again, that stuff is all easy once the tranny is out.

That description says

  • The 2005-2010 Mustang uses a concentric slave cylinder instead of a conventional throwout bearing.
  • Therefore this clutch kit will not include a throwout bearing.
Does that mean we do NOT have throw out bearings in there stock?
So stlsteed is wrong?

Also... do you think I really NEED a new clutch?
And what do you think I am looking at cost wise both with and without a new clutch?
