To paint it, you'd want to take the button off. Not sure how easy or hard that would be... But as to what to paint it with Krylon Fusion is great for plastics. I always forget to turn mine off as well...IMO they made it wrong, default should be off, not on. But they cater to the stupid to avoid liability.
