Default Miles to Empty

Yesterday a rare occurance. My "Miles to Empty" info popped up and told me I would run out of gas in 50 miles. I drove another 13 miles before filling up this morning. Assuming a 14.0 gallon tank, the computer was within 1 mile of what I would figure by conventional means.

Pretty darned accurate!

Did the display light up in red? Mine does when you get close to being empty

Is that on the fancy cluster? I have the 4 gauge cluster and I've never seen it go red.

it goes to red when you are very low. i brought mine down to 0 miles to empty, and i had about .5 gallons left in the tank.

Does anyone actually rely on "miles to empty"? This is a calculation based on your average MPG and and the computers' estimate of remaining fuel. Drive like a madman on the current tank and if you haven't reset the on-board at the last fill-up the "miles to empty" may leave you high and dry.

The percentage of S197's (and just about most cars) with accurate on-board mileage data is very small. Aproximately 80% or more of the on-boards are off by about 2 MPG mainly due to their inability to properly calculate the amount of fuel used/remaining. IMO, with experience you can tell within 1 gallon what's in your tank based on the fuel gauge. As much as I'd like to rely mainly on the on-board, it's simply more inaccurate than my "guesstimate" based on the gauge.

I'm not saying there aren't any that are accurate. My g/f's '06 is nearly dead-on at each fill-up; gallons used and average MPG (compared to hand calculated). But hers is the exception based on all the input over my 3 years on this forum and others.

But who knows; maybe the on-board accuracy has improved with the 10'...

I guess that's 6 gauge crap I don't have. I think I'm the only GT owner with the 4 gauge.

Well, it's off by about 36 miles then. I suppose I should have looked at the tank capacity. I could have easily waited until tomorrow to fill up. The yellow light didn't change to red. It showed I had 36 miles to empty. What I actually had left was twice that.
