That makes no sense (not saying I don't believe you). But what that means is that someone with 50k miles on their car could swap clusters, bring the car to a shop and have them set the mileage to 10 and then go trade in or sell their car.

Well, that is kind of how it works though. That's why we have things like carfax and it is important to inspect the car mechanically and cosmetically to see if the mileage fits. Heck, with the electronic odometers these days, unscrupulous people can figure out how to "roll-back" the mileage with a laptop and an OBD connection. And it is ALSO why we do not want to be a place to help people do this for dishonest purposes!

you can buy a used cluster from ebay, jukyard whatever and plug that right it. The reading is in the cluster. You now can have magically erased 10K miles off your car for the cost of the cluster. install is easy as can be.

I am sure there is someone else where mileage is stored BUT its probably not accessible to anyone but the dealer maybe. sad but true folks, you can easily be buying a car with 80k miles but the odometer only reads 40k

What kind of laws are there in the Netherlands?........This guy is asking how to spin back his odometer.........because there are to many miles on his car........for people who are test driving his car........WTF...... are you kidding!

I do find it interesting that the mileage could be stored in the cluster. Yes.....good thing for Car Fax.......plus I usually buy new.

Yup. That is why it's a federal offense with big legal repurcussions if you do it to commit fraud.

It is not possible, not with the vast majority of handheld tuners.

Due to American laws, any car that is made to be sold in America must have a tamper proof odometer (well, at least as tamper proof as possible). And no device that is to be sold to the general public is allowed to be able to modify any of the ODO recordings.

As said by several other guys, I agree with what they said: you would have to go to a shop to be able to modify any mileage records in your odo.

Your right....I was thinking more of the registration trail but, if your the only owner there is no way to verify the mileage during renewing (mail).....maybe emissions?

no emissions and i dont think i report the mileage to the BMV either when i renew online. now this all depends on where you live. Because emissions would probably be one way to verify mileage.

Buyer beware......the old digital odometers had the data stored way-up under the dash and only way it could be programmed is by the dealer. When you swapped a cluster the mileage would come from the module under the dash. Hard to believe with modern technology that the manufacturers would revert to cluster data storage.....makes no sense?
