A 305 is probably as wide as I would go....but since different tire manufacturer's tires actually measure in size differently, I'd choose a good tire as others have mentioned and then look at the dimensions to see how they measure up.

ex: A buddy of mine bought a 295 in one brand for his vette that measured the same as a 305 in another brand.

If you're doing it for looks, then by all means jam whatever you can in there, but if it's for performance, I really don't think anything bigger than a 275 out back is necessary. My drag tires are 275/60/15s, but my street tires (all about looks) are 28x12x15. That's as big as I could go without cutting the bump stop brackets.

You need better rubber and suspension mods.

you can probably get away with 315s, but i would stay at 305s.

You can always send your wheels to weldcraft get them widened to 12" and run 335s.

That is what I am having done with my super snake alcoas!!

That's gonna be a tight squeeze between the fender and the wheel well. I haven't seen anyone fit better than a 325.

What?? Of course a wider tire provides more traction. The larger the contact patch the more friction the tire creates between your vehicle and the road surface. Perhaps a trip back to physics class is in order.

I will agree that switching to a softer compound at this point makes more sense that stuffing something too large under the rear fenders.

Correction:

You can fit a 335/30/18 Nitto 555R drag radial on a 18x11" +45mm offset wheel (i.e. - SVT GT500 rim widened by Weldcraft) with no modifications. This has been confirmed on a few Shelbys at SVT performance forums.

I'm going to use Mickey Thompson 345/35/18 ET Street drag radials, and will only require the removal of the shock dust cover/boot. Here are a few threads about the top.

My personal 18x11" thread

ModularFords - Nitto 335/30/18

SVT Performance - 335/30/18
