Question Would you buy Ford's extended coverage plan to cover your 2011 tranny...just in case?

Hi Guys,
My dealership has contacted me to let me know that I can still buy Ford's extended service plan. I don't have any big issues w/ my manual transmission at the present (4600 miles)...but down the line, wouldn't it make sense to have extended coverage on these components since the repairs can be very costly once the warranty expires?

Here is part of the letter:

Ford’s Extended Service Plans are the best warranty coverage for any Ford vehicle, and it’s backed by Ford Motor Company. We offer the Premium Care coverage that covers virtually all components except for maintenance and normal wear items. I have priced some options below:

5 years or 100,000 miles (expires 01-15-2016 or @ 100000 miles) Price $2235.00 which includes an inspection

6 Years or 125,000 miles (expires 01-15-2017 or @ 125000 miles) Price $2660.00 which includes an inspection

7 Years or 125,000 miles (expires 01-15-2018 or @ 125000 miles) Price $2915.00 which includes an inspection

NO. If the tranny is going to fail due to the crappy design, then it'll fail either before warranty in which case you're covered or after warranty in which case you can get it resolved if you yell loud enough since this is a major issue and black eye for Ford. As far as extended warranties in general, if you really feel the need to gamble that YOUR car is going to require that much insurance due to problems, find a more reliable make/model. I usually recommend that you take the $2200 or $2900 price tag for that "bet my car will fail" and put it into an interest-bearing CD. If you have a major failure, put that towards it. If not, you still have that money + interest after 5 or 7 years.

I've owned over a dozen cars, almost all which I bought new, and NEVER had problem that would have warranted throwing my money away on an extended (choke) warranty.

I personally bought an extended warranty, not because of the known tranny problems though. I'm just a warranty kind of guy and seem to always have absolutely terrible luck whenever I decide not to go for the warranty lol.

I got the maximum coverage plan and got a 6 year 75000 mile plan. Also got it for a lot less than those being offered to you though, I managed to get mine for I think $1200 or so. Not really too bad IMO. It was worth my peace of mind, and hopefully I don't have to make use of it but if I do I'll feel happy having it there.

Why would you buy an extended warranty that already covers what Ford gives you for free?

all brand new Fords get 3yr/36,000 miles bumper to bumper, and they get a 5yr/60,000 mile powertrain.

so you'd be giving away $2,300 for nothing but "Peace of Mind". please read your warranty booklet

btw, if you call Ford directly you can get a $100 deductible Premiumcare ESP with a 5yr/60,000 term for $500-700 depending on model and mileage. You guys need to shop around. If you search this site several guys have given the phone #'s out for reputable dealerships who aren't looking to rip you off

Thanks for the feedback/knowledge guys
I ask because I have a history of having to pay for very expensive repairs once the warranty expires...example, my Nissan Pathfinder...spent so much money keeping that thing running...

My 2 cents - if you plan to keep the car for many years, get an extended warranty (though shop wisely for good deals). I have bought one when I purchased my (used) 2011 not because of specific known problems, but just because cars these days have so many systems and electronics (non of which are covered by powertrain warranty) that any little thing that requires replacement costs hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

I used to own a 2005 Ford Escape which I really liked. At its 4th year (warranty already expired) had to replace the AC unit - about $1000.

I currently own a 2007 Toyota Sienna for which I did get an extended warranty - last fall the tire pressure system failed - over $2000 if I had to pay myself (covered under the extended warranty)

YMMV, but I do not think it is a waste of money

Exactly my thought process. Part of having wonderful new electronics is that they are incredibly useful and convenient, yet at the same time they also cost crazy amounts to replace. I'd rather put in the money on the front end. But then again I also see those who don't decide to buy warranties It's all about what lets you sleep at night.

Plus now with monetary inflation it's better to spend the money now instead of saving it for later
