Skip shift ?..but different...
Yep, another one.....but not the same type of question.
I disconnected skip **** with less than 1000 miles if memory serves me correctly. This is not from a tune, but positive disconnect by unplugging it. I have not had any problems at all from the tranny but a rare/seldom notchy feel.
I have read where some have issues downshifting into 1st while moving very much at all. Over the last few days, I have experimented with this and have been able to engage 1st as a downshift for slowing at speeds up to 35 mph or more. Not releasing the clutch there but still, it is a solid, quiet engagement. I am not revving before the downshift any either. I was just recently slowing from 45 in 3rd, and went right to 1st......just as smooth as going from 6th to 5th.
Now, my question is could the skip shift solenoid have any connection to locking the shifter out of first until certain speeds/rpms? Tunes may not get totally rid of its function. Just wondering......

None I've ever seen. It actually moves a ramp into the shifter gate that detours the shift lever. It's either on or off. I can only imagine the complexity to have some mechanism standing watch on 1st gear. Very unlikely.
It is more probable that the syncros are not properly engaging on the cars having trouble. This could be from wear, abuse, or mfg defect.
