Default noob tranny question

So I've owned and worked on a few 60's stangs, but have never had a newer model. I was looking at a 06 gt and saw it had a 5 speed auto with overdrive. I though this was just a regular automatic transmission until I saw the shifter...

What exactly is a auto 5 speed?

Does it mean you need to shift just without a clutch, or is it a automatic that can go into manual mode?

I'm a complete noob with these later models

haha yes it does,
but to answer your question it means its an automatic, its just a 5 speed auto, aka 5 gears, you can select gears in pretty much all new cars these days meaning it'll say in what ever gear you select. D is where it'll just go thru the gears for you like an automatic

Like he said,

it means the car is an automatic without a clutch and switches gears automatically, but it will say what gear you are in.
Of course you have the D,3,2,1 option on the shifter too.

Ok so the listing I was looking at had the transmission incorrectly listed, hence my confusion and questions...

Hi mlager8,

You can shift to from first to third gears. Shifting tips are located on pages 213-214 of the Owner's Guide, so if you want to get a jump start on learning about the new Mustangs, check out http://www.MotorcraftService.com/pub.../11musog2e.pdf. Any plans to get a new one of your own?
