downshifting works fine if you let the speed drop to within the "normal" limit eg 10mph for 1st, 20 for 2nd etc (with stock gears) downshifting to raise your RPMs in a race on the Highway would be bad in an auto, as aaquib said it uses the engine decel thing and doing this at speed will feel like slamming the brakes.

Cool. I wasn't sure about Ford's arangment. It makes sense.

You're all good. Carry on.

I've driven cars of every major manufacturer and I must say that of all of them, Ford uses the worst automatics.

Then explain the auto camaro... That tranny actually compromises hp/tq. And not to mention those old dodge/chrysler trannys that were made from a combination of play-doh and dog feces.

Not gonna even get into the major transmission failures in BMW's 3 series cars.

Ford's autos are actually some of the best I've seen in any domestic (save for some high end caddies, and such), now the manuals are a different story...

Disagree about the 4l60E but you're dead on about the dodge trannies...had nothing but probs with my ram. My old bone stock auto 2000 Z28 put down 307rwhp when I first bought it with 78k on the clock. That's around a 12% loss which is really good for an auto.
