Default need help/tips on painting

Ok I bought rustolum gloss black paint from auto zone, the spray type. I want to paint the gt emblems, the pony on the grill and possibly the gas cap in the back, keeping the gt in the middle though. I have never painted before... I plan on just lightly sanding and spraying quick and light and just taping off the corners of the pony at least, i will take off the emblems and gas cap. do you guys think this will work and that's all I will need to make it look nice? any suggestions? thanks guys I am really looking forward to this new look. I already have gloss black rims so yeah it should be sick.

Are the emblems plastic? If so then use what's called an Adhesion promoter first, so it sticks well.
Clean the emblem well, I'd use nail polish remover. (I've tried paint thinner for cleaning plastic stuff, it messes it up.)
Clean it off, hit it with some HIGH grit sandpaper. (I'd use at least 1000) then do a light coat of paint. Let it dry, then hit it with a heavier coat. I'd do 3-4 coats. Then hit it with a clear coat so the paint lasts. (I'd do at least 2 coats of that..)

I checked out a few other car forums that painted their emblems. From the looks of it, it seems pretty easy. Here's a short summary of what i read.

1. (Obviously) Remove the emblem.
2. Sand the emblem. You'll want high grit sandpaper for this.
3. Clean the emblem completely. You can use mineral spirits for this.
4. Spray a light coat of PRIMER. Let it dry, then apply 2-3 more coats. Let it dry.
5. Apply a light coat of black. Let it dry. Apply 2-3 more coats. Let it dry several hours, maybe even overnight.
6. Apply 2-3 clear coats.
7. Install back on your car.

I also read that somewhere else where you can apply chapstick to the place(s) you don't want to paint, then afterwards you can clean it right off. I've never heard of this before, but from another write-up I read, it looked pretty good.
