Default first time painting (valve covers)

Hey guys this isn't my first time painting I've done some guitar pedals and stuff like that. But this is the first thing I'm painting that I need to come out perfect. My question is what process should I use to paint these. I am painthing them ford blue and I want the finish to look like glass. I have access to a sand blaster and a spray gun. But I have no experience using a spray gun. I would probably prefer spray cans. Do I need to wet sand? How many coats should I do? Any tips would be greatly appriceated.

Thanks
kevin

Here's where you should start https://mustangforums.com/forum/2005...k-suicide.html

Makes me want to paint mine too.

Ok, first things first. They will NOT be perfect, especially on your first run with a gun. Sand them down as smooth as you can with 400-600 grit paper, make sure they are totally clean of all debris. Primer, a few coats of base, and like 5 coats of clear. Then you can wetsand the top portion of the covers. Do you have a polisher or a buffer? If you want them as smooth as glass you'd better. You can't really do much for the sides of the covers because it will be hard to get the buffer/polisher down there. If you have a buffer, use 2000 grit paper, and if you have a polisher, don't go lower then 2500. Wetsanding is tedious but if you are patient, it will come out great.

I would blast, prime, paint, decal then clear. What grit media are you using?

My blasting sand is really cheap crap. So it doesnt hurt any steel. I've blasted some aluminum without any problems many times

Be sure to use a high temp primer and high temp clear at the very least. I did this and it has held up beautifully for almost a year now (so far). I would say practice with the gun on a piece of cardboard and get used to the air pressure and spray of the gun. It's not difficult and will turn out much better than a cheap spray can. I didn't need to wetsand or anything and mine came out wonderfully. Follow taco bill's valve cover removal sticky and use Namelessliar's thread as a guide. I did, never having painted ANYTHING that involved a gun and had no problems. Just be sure you sand/clean THOROUGHLY before the primer.
