Whining noise from rear end

I changed out my fluid and added the friction mod as well, but it didn't change anything. What came out was pretty gunky and thick. I found a couple of metal flakes too. I ended up taking it to a mechanic. He opened the differential up and said I need to replace the ring and pinion and the spider gears as well. That wasn't what I wanted to hear.
