OEM Windshield Tint
We have a 2008 Mustang GT Shelby. We are trying to get it passed for the State of Texas inspection. The windshield had aftermarket film tint on it. The inspection failed due to the tint. We had the aftermarket tint film removed on the windshield. The inspector is still saying the windshield is tinted.
I undersand the Texas law is 25% for the windshield. I understand that the side windows can be tested with a device. I don't want to get a doctor's note. I don't want to just go to another tester (seems they can throw you in jail if you get this wrong and try to beat the system).
So, I have 3 questions:
1. I would like to know if the OEM windshield complies with the 25% tint requirements. Does anyone know the tint level on a OEM windshield for a 2008 Mustang?
2. Does the Shelby plant in Las Vegas do anything to the OEM windshield (add tint or color)?
3. Is there a test for an installed windsield that will tell if is is tinted to a specific amount?

An unadulterated factory OEM windshiled will not have tint. Side and rear glass may have Facotry tint and that is imbeded in the glass iteself and carries a DOT approval stamp.
That being said a windshield could have UV coating and anti-glare coating but that would only impede about 5% of the light entering in.
Does your windshield have a DOT number on the glass? If not, it's not the OEM glass so it may be tinted.

Texas law says:
0) NO tint allowed on windshield at all beyond the top n inches (n is a number I can't recall). I believe you can have clear UV tint on the lower portion, but given the possibility of it being corrupted by cleaning agents, I would avoid it.
1) front side window - no more than 25% total tint (includes aftermarket tint + factory tint (if any)
2) Unlimited tint on rear side windows and rear window (as long as the windows aren't completely opaque).

Okay, great. Thank you.
We were able to get an appointment with the Texas Department Of Transporation. They said they have a device that can test it.
The windshield does have a DOT label.
The problem was that the tester doesn't have a device to do a test he just guesses.

Texas DOT Measures Windshield Tint for 2008 Shelby at 72%. Limit is 75% so we're good. We have a paper now that got us passed in the inspection.
I just thought it was poor practice for Jiffy Lube to fail us when their was nothing wrong.

He "just guesses"? Awesome. You should ask him for lottery numbers...
Like Texas, it's a state requirement. In Texas, it's nothing more than a safety inspection (lights, horn, signals, wipers, tire tread, etc). I suspect that since the idiot inspector wouldn't pass the car, Michigan's is also for safety. In California, it's just for emissions (or it was 10 years ago when I lived there).
