That seems to work on mine. Another trick if you are driving is to leave it in the forward gear until you are stopped, before attempting reverse.

What he said^ Mine does something similar every now and then. I just go to first, then second, the reverse, slips right in with the old one two lube!

This is normal for most if not all manual cars. As others said, just slip into a forward gear (other than fifth because the Mustang will not allow 5th to Reverse) then into Reverse.
