A thought to sell

That 2008 Tahoe must be close to being paid off. No point in selling it now if it's about paid for, even with that gas mileage. For what you want to do, you should sell the Mustang and buy something fuel efficient but USED. You don't go out and save money by buying new cars, especially if your wife is looking at Infiniti's.

Go lease a volt for 300 something a month. My daily commute is 33 miles and I pay ~20 a month in electricity. Saves me over 200 in gas. I put 5k of positive equity into the lease so my payments are 217 a month, vs 415 on the sti. That + fuel is over $400 a month saved. After the lease is up, buy another stang.

My wife drives a 2012 Ford Edge with Ecoboost. Best thing that we have ever bought!
It's powerful and good on gas.
She gets about 20 around town and 30 on a 600 mile trip on the interstate.
We also have a 2011 civic that easily averages 38mpg, We can get 40+ out of it but usually don't try.

If you choose to get a different car, stay away from the "hybrids" for now, e.g. Sonata Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, etc (Volt is a plug in electric not a hybrid, so it would be fine, just like Siggy said)... The cost in gas does not make up for the premium that you will pay for that car, atleast not in the first 5 years... IF you MUST sell the Mustang, then I would recommend what others here have said about getting used... The Focus is a neat little car and the price is right. Also, the 4 cylinder Accord is roomy, but still... I think 07BlackGT is right... you're going to regret that decision in 2weeks...
Best of luck bro.

Also, if you do happen to sell the 'Stang now, I hope you still plan to visit the board, if nothing else to continue being a part of a great group of people... Not everyone here has to own a pony car... LOL...

Keep the car, and car pool...or buy a junker DD for $1500....I have a 1997 Oldmobile for the mileage....talk to your family, I'm sure there is someone who is about to buy a new car, and is going to trade their existing car for nothing!
Making the junker the DD, will also reduce the insurance costs!

True, but that's a one time hit to secure ongoing savings. If everyone was perfect about saving cash, you wouldn't have to consider that factor, but people don't save. They see cash sitting free and spend it. Hence why people will pay more for a better MPG vehicle, versus saving the one time cash of buying a cheaper car and using the cash saved to offset gas costs. That cash saved inevitably gets spent elsewhere, rather than being saved to offset gas costs.

It makes sense to sell the soon-to-be 5 year old Tahoe for a more efficient vehicle. And yes a cross-over SUV would get significantly better fuel economy than the Tahoe while still providing room for the kiddies.
But I would not sell your car as you will take a bath on it. Besides, aren't the 5.0s rated at 19/26 MPG? It isn't a hybrid, but it gets better fuel economy than most cars its size.
