05 GT MPG/Performance Concerns

I average 27 mpg and its all stop signs, no real traffic. Ive got on it for a while and then reset the mpg and drove like a grandma and saw maybe a .5 mpg difference.

My plan all along was to get a CAI/Tuner but I want to get this sorted out first. I have very little mechanical experience, i.e. brakes, oil changes, exhaust swap and CAI. I don't want to mess with the spark plugs and I hear changing the fuel filter can be a b****. I plan to clean the TB when I get my CAI.
Any rec's on where to take it (local shop or dealership)? What should I expect to pay? What service do I ask for? Tune-up? Or can I have them check for any problems for free?

My lightly modded auto with 4.10's, CAI and tune will still blow your socks off. I have to constantly feather the throttle at a stop to keep from spinning or jumping if I'm in tight areas.
Also fuel filter is easy to replace as long as you know how to jack your car up.

Are you in the LA area? I have noticed that my mileage has gone down steadily over the past four months, and I think it is because they are increasing the Ethanol content in the gas here. That, along with the short driving, is probably contributing to the 13.5. As a means of comparison, I'm driving a supercharged Roush in LA stop and go traffic, and my mileage is hovering around 13.5 now (normally around 15), and I'm pretty sure its the crappy gas. Maybe once they switch to the "fall blend," mileage will go up.
As for service, fuel filter is cheap and easy to do. If you want to get the car checked out thoroughly, go to Galpin Ford and ask for Leonard. He's the Mustang guy, and he'll take care of you.

WOW, best I have ever seen is 27MPG and that was a full tank cruising at 60-65mph on my way home from holidays. Went non stop from station to station. Best milage my car has seen from the day I bought it (brand new factory order) although mine isn't an auto, I have the 5M.

5 miles of nothing but traffic and I'd expect not much more than 14-15 MPG. But it's worth checking the usual: tire pressure, plugs, replace air filter, replace fuel filter, clean the TB, etc. I've also found that the ethanol content can impact fuel mileage by as much as 4 MPG.
These S197's respond very well to a CAI & custom tune for the sake of about 15-25 RWHP. You can also remove the "tortourous path" restrictive honeycomb thing in the 05's stock intake for a few single digit RWHP.
