Better to be safe than sorry. So that means you should cover a few things up, like the alternator, computer, fuse box, air filter, oil filler cap, etc. Just use plastic baggies or aluminum foil.

I spray down the engine bay with a mild automotive citrus based cleaner, designed not to damage paint. Let it sit a little, and use a gentle spray of water to rinse.

Repeat, maybe us a small brush on really grimy areas. Then I use my leaf blower and gently blow most of the excess water away.

I unwrapped the components I covered earlier, and with a soapy buck of water, I use a old microfiber towel to "wet towel" clean those areas, and finish drying the engine bay.

Like I said, better to be safe than sorry. Some say you don't have to cover stuff up, and you can use a high pressure washer. Maybe they are lucky? Is it worth potential problems down the line because you don't want to take an extra 5 minutes to cover a few small components? A degreaser combined with low pressure works amazing.
