Default Mustang 05 - Leaking coolant.

No matter what we've done, I've thought it was the heating coil and we bypassed it. Nope its still draining and leaking my coolant like no tomorrow. Now the car overheated for the first time and the thermostat shot up. I pulled over immediately and added only one and an half thing of water to have it survive the trip home. I haven't put any coolant back in cause I know it'll drip.

The photo below was immediately after doing 75 mph and arriving somewhere else. I wanted to see how it did and saw it pouring out like so.. any help would be nice. Its still dripping with the water added but in another location I think, if no the pouring of the coolant was so fast that I couldn't tell it time.

It was dripping through something above. This was on the left side of the car[driver]
Apologies if the photo is too big I will shrink it if needed.

Based on the alternator cover my guess is that is a 4.0?

If so, most likely the plastic thermostat housing split. Very common problem on the 4.0 and a very easy fix. Only takes about a half hour to remove the bolts and swap the housing.

If you want a more permanent solution, get the aluminum housing off Amazon. The plastic housing will split again, only a matter of "when" and not "if" it splits

In the S197 section for the 4.0 I believe that there may be a sticky about how to replace the housing.

Yeah its a 4.0 - not sure where that is but will look it up and see if that is the problem. I assume the split is an actual splitting of this aluminum not just a term for it. Sorry very new to cars and mustangs so learning more and more as I go.

The stock housing is plastic. Typically splits on a seam at the top. And 99% of the time if there is a coolant leak on a 4.0 it is the plastic thermostat housing.

Luckily it is an easy fix as long as you don't have the Xcharger supercharger - I had to take the supercharger off to get to one bolt and remove the housing. But if you don't have that it is easy to do.

Here is the forum section:
https://mustangforums.com/forum/4-0l...ll-how-to.html
And a search will turn up threads on the thermostat housing replacement.

This one talks about replacing with the aluminum housing, but the process is the same

I think you need 10 posts to view images. I will post in the mod room though to see if an admin can give you viewing privileges.
