2005 Convertible Smart Junction Box Replacement
Just got my 2005 Mustang convertible back from the Ford dealership. I finally had the airbag recall done and my SJB replaced. This is the second time for the SJB. Good news is that the dealership charged me half of what I was quoted by two local mechanics. One guy quoted me $1500 and the Ford dealer did it for $742. Still expensive but could have been much worse! We are expecting a huge snow and ice storm tonight and tomorrow. How do I protect the SJB from new water damage? Any ideas. I don’t want to go through this again!!! Also, I tried to reset my auto lock fob without success. Shouldn’t the dealer have reset it after he finished the SJB replacement? Is this something I can do myself? If so, does anyone know how? Thanks in advance!!!

TSB, but not a recall... I need a better cover, mine froze to the car this week, and with
the rain, it's getting under the cover. I bought a water-proof cover too, yeah, right....
So, I had to put another one under this one for now...

Is it possible to seal the box or that area on the passenger side firewall with silicone (or a different sealant)? Or is the water getting in from a different area instead of near the passenger side firewall?

It gets in from the clips the cowl covers go into, and, if the cowl drains are
clogged it comes in through the cabin air filter housing. There are rubber
flaps in the cowl, the lips open when water gets in to drain. If they get clogged
or covered with leaves or debris, water can't drain. IF you open them up
permanently, or remove them to keep an open hole, any engine bay fumes
will get into the cabin. That's why they're designed the way they are...
clogged it comes in through the cabin air filter housing. There are rubber
flaps in the cowl, the lips open when water gets in to drain. If they get clogged
or covered with leaves or debris, water can't drain. IF you open them up
permanently, or remove them to keep an open hole, any engine bay fumes
will get into the cabin. That's why they're designed the way they are...

You can get at the one on the passenger side, to the right and down from the battery.
Stick your finger up in there to be sure it's clear. There is one on the driver side too,
forget where it is, but you can see them hanging down out of the cowl.
For all intents and purposes, I would just buy a multi-layer car cover, and be done
with it. IT has to be water proof, like mine is NOT, but says it is. The car cover
is now frozen to the car as well... Water got under the cover, lots, and it all froze up.
Cowl is clear though, it's not a running water leak, so it's fine. I had to take the
cover off Saturday evening and put my 10'x10' pop-up pavilion fabric under the cover
from the hoot to roof, so it's double layered there... I am going to by a freekin'
100-layer cover till I can find some property to put a garage on...
