How To: Replace Downstream O2 Sensors for the Mechanically Disinclined
Hi all,
This is a very simple process but it took some time for me to do some research so I thought I would compile everything here since it's so fragmented.
Difficulty: Easy
Duration: 30 mins
Tools:
Jack and Jackstand
O2 sensor (I bought NTK 22500). It fits both V6 and V8 for the downstream sensors.
Anti-seize (if yours doesn't come with it. The NTK 22500 does come with it so you don't need it)
O2 sensor wrench or socket (see picture below)
Reading the codes.
Bank 1 is the passenger side. Bank 2 is the driver's side.
Sensor 1 is upstream (pre-cat). Sensor 2 is downstream (post-cat)
So looking at my CEL code, my fault is downstream, driver side.
Step 1:
Make sure the car is in gear and e-brake is up. Jack up the front of the car.
Step 2:
Locate your cat and you will see a sensor sticking out of it. Follow the wire until you reach the blue clip. Disconnect it.
Step 3:
Use the o2 sensor removal tool to unscrew your sensor. My picture isn't representative of your car but it gives you an idea.
Step 4:
If you don't have anti-seize, apply it onto your thread. Just a little will do. Don't get it on the sensor itself.
Step 5:
You have an M18 sensor, which means you hand tight it + 0.5 to 0.75 turn with your wrench. This translates to 26-33 ft-lbs.
Step 6:
Reset your check engine light and drive around for 10 mins to cycle the ECU. I thought that maybe if I don't reset it and drive around, I'll know that it'll cycle through when the light turns off. After 20 mins of driving, I learned that this was not the case. You have to clear your CEL. Hopefully, me being mechanically disinclined will help you not make stupid mistakes or waste time googling, like I did.
That's basically it. I spent a good amount of time trying to determine if I have an M18 or M12 sensor and confirming that I'm replacing the right one. Hopefully, the info is now in a consolidated area and it'll truly be a half-hour job.
I also took pictures of replacing a fuel filter. But I found a comprehensive youtube video so I didn't do a writeup. I'm not sure if posting it will be helpful.
