Default 2007 4.0 Project Rebuild

Hello everyone!

Hard to believe that I have been out of this place since around 2017. Used to come here all the time to read every single post (and ask more than a few questions too).

I bought my 2007 back in 2011, and it's been my daily driver until July 2022. The timing cassettes decided to give out. I almost made it to 200k miles, and i'm very upset that it didn't. Ford wanted about $7,000 to replace the motor with one that had 145k miles. Fortunately, I found one with about 81k and should be here sometime next week. Local Mustang shop will do the install. Maybe i'll get around to installing the X-Charger on this motor.

Which leaves the big question: What should I do with the old 4.0? I don't particularly want to just throw it in the trash, but I've been so out of the loop when it comes to aftermarket parts (when did AM start selling things for anything other than Mustangs?!) I'm thinking I can rebuild this motor (slowly), but seems like there still isn't too much in terms of people modding/building these motors. I used to want SuperSix parts, but there wasn't too much information on them when I was originally looking in the mid-2010's. Does anyone have any experience with building them? Aside from the bigger jobs like machining the block, i'd like to build it myself. Not my first time working with a motor, although the timing cassettes do seem like a HUGE pain.

Any help or information that can point me in the right direction would be awesome.

Thanks!

Rebuilding a 4.0 was never a great idea, even less so now with even less support than before and less demand.

For future reference, you could consider buying a totaled 11-14 V6 or GT to use as a donor car for a mega swap project.

Hi Jim! Good to see you're still around! You were one of the ones that convinced me to buy the X-Charger.

I figured it still wasn't a good idea. I did not know if that stance had changed in the last 5 or so years. These motors seem pretty durable, but still not the best platform to build on.

I've definitely considered this. I don't know the differences between the 11-12 and 13-14 Coyote motors. From what i've read in the past, there were different "generations" of coyotes, and the first ones gave more problems than the newer ones? Is it possible to hook up a coyote motor to the current electronics (speedometer etc.)? I'm sure they've streamlined the entire process to where it's basically plug and play now.

Very durable and can take a lot of abuse. My 2006 showed that. It had over 200,000 on it when I sold it and that was after 2 seasons of nitrous and then the Xcharger starting at 90,000 miles. The guy I sold it to sold it with 245,000 on it and still running strong. Last I heard it was in Fort Wayne in a collectors garage.I almost bought it back, but missed it by 2 weeks.
