I have to stick up for the Steeda Tri-Ax. It was kinda stiff for a couple thousand miles, but now its smooth and sweet. The thing about this shifter is that it must be installed with the shifter nut a bit loose. You will get tight 1/2 and 5/r shifts if its too tight. Also, it seems that you have to put some miles on it for it to be at its best. With the stock shifter, when you go for a hard 3rd gear shift, its like running in to a wall. Wont shift. But the Tri Ax gives you a nice 2/3 shift. just my 2 cents.

I am not thrilled with my stock shifter but TRUST ME it is the current best choice. Steeda throw shifter sucks and everyone I know who had one - took it out quick. If you are looking to drag, the stock shifter is the best for now until someone comes up with a better one. If you are road racing, then the B&M shifter is the best. I replaced the stock clutch and noticed an improvement with the shifting but not much. Although you are not 100% satisfied with your stock shifter, if your are drag racing, it is your best choice for now.

I'm just curious. I have noticed that some people are complaining about slack in the drive train. I have made several observations in regards to this.
1) Mine has absolutely no abnormal slack at all.
2) To the best of my knowledge, I have yet to see anyone who has been driving since before the days of front wheel drive complain about any drive train slack in these cars.

So my question is...
Are those of you who seem to think your cars have an excessive amount of drive train slack accustomed to driving only FWD cars?

I'm just wondering if it isn't just your perception of the differences between FWD and RWD.
Keep in mind that a RWD car will always have a little more detectable slack because of the drive shaft and the type of u-joints they use. (the constant velocity u-joints used in FWD cars essentially have no slack). Also there is a little slack in all differentials. This is known is backlash and is neccesary for the ring and pinion gears to contact each other and wear correctly. You won't notice this backlash in a FWD car nearly as much, however this is not a problem and nothing to worry about. I once had a 69 GMC C1500 pickup with a two piece drive shaft and a 460 hp big block that made over 500 ft lbs of torque. Yes there was perceptible slack when compared to a FWD car, but I never once had a problem with this setup.

In regards to the stock shifter. I am very happy with mine. It's as good or better than some of the Japanese stuff I have driven, but essentially it's your car and if you are not happy with it there are a few aftermarket products out there that you can try.

Default RE: drivetrain slack

I for one have never even driven a front wheel drive I have had three pre '65 Alfa Romeo's and they too have a two piece driveshaft. The chunk in my Cougar (W/ automatic) has so much backlash it's crazy plus the couple of Pick-up's I've owned with three on the tree would make a good clank when the drivetrain twisted tight.

My Mustang has more slack than the Alfa's but less than the Cougar or PU's and I guess really it's not huge, but for some reason I notice it alot. I'm sure it's just me getting used to the car.

Very interesting. As I said, everyone I know took out the Steeda quick. Perhaps they didn't give it enough break in time? My only complaint with my car now is exactly your comment - getting into third during drag is too much work. I launch off the line, become an animal in second, then lose 1/2 sec trying to get into third. So your saying the steeda will improve once you break it in and if you install loose?

Anyone had experience with that Hurst shifter?
Should arrive this week, install next week HOPEFULLY by Sunday for the last drag test and tune of the season here in MD.

I think you gave up on the Tri Ax a bit too soon, chevykiller. Mine is much smoother than when it was first put in. I had it installed at the dealer, and they had that shift nut too tight. It was stiff shiftin 1/2 and 5/r, but after I loosened it up and put some miles on it, Im quite satisfied. Any other Tri Ax owners out there that wanna stick up for their shifter? [sm=feedback.gif]

Yes, I have to agree I'm not particually crazy about the shifter either. I have experience that its hard to shift from fifth to third on many occasions.
