Drilling & Tapping a Shift Knob

Drilling & Tapping a Shift ****
I have an object which I think would make an ideal shift **** and was looking for some information on drilling and tapping it. I got the q-ball **** from SatinSilver05 and I love it, but I'm getting annoyed with it's redness. The material is a hard plastic. So here's basically what I need to know:
1. What size bits do I need?
2. Can I do this with a regular power-drill, or am I going to need some kind of a press?
3. I'm not a machinist, but I did once have to re-thread a 1/2" carriage-bolt. That gives you an idea of my mechanical ability, is there anything else I need to know?

RE: Drilling & Tapping a Shift ****
will the threads hold? Sometimes plastic is kinda brittle.
You might be better off to just drill a hole just big enough to fit snugly on the shifter. Not loose enough that it slips off and on but just enough to let the threads on the shifter tap it for you.
If it slips, you could drill a small hole in the front (where it will not be visible) and sink a an allen screw in to hold it in place.
I did that with an eight ball way back in the late 80s.
Anyway, good luck

Dave...
BTW, Yes, I do use a drill press. The base already has a hole in it, for the drill bit to pass through,so this is what holds the cue ball in-place.
