At first it is going to be a little worse than average because you will be playing with the new gears. But over all, maybe 2 or 3 mpg

i've had the same problem with motive and precision 3.73's. i saw that frpp just came out with a redsigned version of the 3.73 gear. it has a back cut ring gear just like the factory set in the 05-06's. don't know if they have done the same with 4.10's yet. i can't bring myself to buy another set of gears since i'm not sure it's really the gears that cause the whine. i found that the carrier(positraction unit) has .003-.005 runout causing the gear to move oblong as it turns. this may be the culprit. it would explain why they had so many problems with the explorer and rangers also. they had 3.73 from the factory and lots of problems with noise. the mustang shares the same posi unit (31spline) as the explorer. hope you have better luck and i'll vote 4.10's or even 4.30's.
hmm these aren't the ones you sold, are they?

no worrys andyman those gears had less than 200 miles on them and the new set did the exact same thing so i'm positive the gears are fine. it's fords posi units that are machined wrong. i'll re-shim mine and hopefully get the noise completely gone i just have too much stuff to do and it only makes noise at 45-60mph nothing below and nothing above. my wife doesn't even notice it but i do. hell she doesn't even notice the gas gauge so i guess that didn't say much....if you have any problems let me know i'll send you the set thats in mine now. so far only a handful of people have noticed this problem in the mustangs i hope you don't[sm=gears.gif]

lostsoul-idon't know if they will make any noise or not i just know that ford has redesigned the gears. i don't know the reason but it makes me wonder. ford has a habit of engineering around a problem. for instance our stock driveshaft is a two piece unit because ford had a vibration and noise issue with the one piece. now the V6's i think still have the one piece shaft. that tells me there is a problem in the rear since the v6 uses a 7.5" rear and the GT uses the 8.8. also my 06 comes with the axle tube dampeners and the panhard bar is filled with sand to reduce noise. why didn't they just fix the problem with the rear instead of doing all this stuff to work around it? i still think the noise problem comes from the posi unit being machined wrong. it's the only part in the rear that the explorer and mustang share and they both have had issues.

+1 - I'm the first to admit that I am a terrible driver. I run my car at high rpm all the time just because it's there and if it is - I'll use it!... LOL

If you can baby your car while driving, then the truth is the 4.10's shouldn't make any big difference in mpg, but if your like me (and many others) it's hard to keep it low when it's there for the asking...SMILE...
