Anyone Paint Their Own Stripes

Anyone Paint Their Own Stripes
I was looking to go with the hood, roof, over spoiler and bottom of trunk lid. Those that have done this, what was the degree of difficulty? Any pointers or step by step?
Thanks

I did not do my GT myself, but did my 69 Z-28 and my 69 Mach1. It really depends on your skill level. To do it right you need to wet sand, use fine line tape(3m) to lay out the stripes, use a good base coat clear coat system, wetsand the basecoat to smooth the edges, clear coat the entire panel and maybe even blend ajoining panels, wet sand again and buff. You need a dust free enviroment as well, preferable a paint booth. On a scale of 1 to 10 it is probably an 8 as far as difficulty and skill level if you want it to look factory. You can tell when someone has not taken the right approach and it looks like crud. Fish eye, raised edges, unblended clear coat etc. I would recommend a quality paint like Glasurit or House of Color

From seeing this done in the last couple of week; I would say don't even think of attempting it unless you have the facility and the experience; You're work will be subpar w/o this and you will need to spend more money on round #2 than if you had it done by th epro in the first place; correcting what you have done first. Save your $$ and when you have enough get it done by a pro. ...unless you like stress and sleepless nights and want to practice on a new car. Just a quick comment for MusiccityGT: Sounds like I've done about as much base and clear work as you and I found recently that you do not put any sandpaper to the base color; well for us amaturs you might have to, to straighten out problems we've created. The clear needs to go over untouched base. Even with very fine paper fine lines under strong light can show up in the finished product after clear. The sanding and polish (not wax) buffing after is a skill in itself that I don't have and if you let the pros do it, you'll simply be amazed at the finish. One month later after the solvents evaporate you can wax; do not cover the car in the meantime. I must say my recleared GT is so much smoother and shinier that stock and it hasn't been washed or waxed yet; two more weeks. You're not thinking of doing you own root canal are you? (lol)

My one week old vert is in for paint now. I definatley would not want to be the one to take sandpaper to my new black paint. It is scary watching the pros do it. I coud not imagine trying to do this myself.
You are correct- You cannot sand basecoat. They sand the clearcopat to smooth the edges.
I will post some pics of my car with the paint sanded and front-end off so you can see the steps involved.
