Default Hood Lift kit

I ordered my first mod from Moss Motors - the hood lift kit - http://www.fordmustangstore.com/Shop...74&SortOrder=1

The page doesn't say anything about drilling (or worse rivets...) - but I get the kit in and I have to drill several holes and use pop rivets to hold the strut brackets in place. I'm not completely opposed to drilling holes in my new car, but the idea of rivets scare me some. I can't really find much information so I thought I'd pose the question to the experts:

Does anyone have this kit and if so do you like it, has it held up well? Would you buy it again or would you buy one which used existing mounting locations?

I used the Elite kit from Redline racing which rivets in and I have had no issues at all. I am very pleased.

I have the Stainless Kit from Redline too... I LOVE them...

I have to admit something though - I mounted them backward.. that is.. I mounted the "near" end on the bottom. So when they are UP they are out of my way of accessing the engine compartment.

I happen to like Rivets... the key is don't skimp. They work Wonderfully if you use a good rivet gun and good rivets.

Thanks guys - your posts are starting to make me feel a bit better. I just wish they had listed this in the product description.

PW - what type of rivet gun did you use? I've used rivets for smaller items - but I'm just hesitant in this case due to the amount of pressure/force they will be asked to endure over the life of the car opening/closing and supporting the hood. The rivets included in the kit look very substantial (as does the rest of the kit).

Even a cheap gun will probably work ok but I threw mine away a long time ago and bought a heavy duty one; I'm not home right now to check it but the handles are about a foot long and not skinny like the cheap ones; has swivel head but rarely use that. I believe I bought it at Sears; was years ago now; I'm thing for about $25 you can get a nice one that will last a lifeltime.

What size rivets did they include; I would hope they are at least 3/16"

They are 3/16" - I have an inexpensive Harbor Frieght one which supposedly does 3/16" but I think I'll go by Sears tonight to see what they have. Thanks for the advice.

btw - love the flames! My son (6 yrs) wants me to do something similar to mine. Do you happen to have a larger image I could show him? Thanks!

Put it this way.. Airplanes are held together with rivets. They can be installed with any type of rivet gun. The key is to besure that when it pulls out of the locking feature, it breaks off flush. Flush is good. To tall, and the rivet is to long. To short, and the rivet is not long enough. Just make sure you drill the hole the correct size. A 3/16 cherrymax rivet, which they sent you should be drilled with a number 11 drill bit. This will give you just enough clearance to get the rivet in the hole.

My brother's coming up from AL in a few weeks (he's a prof digital photographer). I've given up trying to get pics that do the paint and finish justice. You can't hardly see the incredible 1/8-3/16" blue pinstripe that outlines the entire flame pattern. Anyway, I do have these two pics here at work that I will add for ya; at least for now. ...and thanks for the compliments; I was a little apprehensive about putting the welder to the car just a few days after I got the car home and then going with what I guess you could call a "radical paint scheme". ...but the result is better than I ever imagined. ...especially the body clearcoat finish. ...Jim

P.S. Listen to your son... he's a smart lad!!!!
