Default First post!! Timing question...

Hi everyone!! Just signed up here as I could do with a bit of advice now and then. My name is Marko I'm 19 and live in Scotland UK. I imported my Mustang from Mexico last year after driving it out there for a bit! I probably can't contribute much to this forum however I really do appreciate any advice I get here.

Was just out setting up the timing on my newly built 351w and noticed that the tdc mark that came up with the timing gun is not mark that i was expecting. When I built the engine i marked on the pulley where i thought was tdc and used it to set up all the rockers as per instructions in the manual. Does that mean that i'll have set up the lifter preload wrong? There is a bit of ticking coming from the roller rockers but I didnt think it was excessive... Maybe i'm missing something here, but just thought i'd ask you guys and see what you think...

Thanks for any help, Marko

Check out my blog if you wanna see pics of the build www.mustangrebuild.blogspot.com

Roller rockers are more noisey than stock stamped
hearing some clicking but not too loud is normal.

You will probably need to go back and check lifter preload a couple
of times as you break everything in to get it just right.

Nice engine, in the middle of same thing right now myself:

351W w/ .03 overbore, TFS stg1 cam, 1.72 RR's, AFR 165's
EFI Edlebrock or GT-40 intake (havent decided), 24lbs injectors, 70mm TB

Man it would be so cool to have American Muscle in europe, nice head turner over there I bet.
Hate to see your gas (petrol) bill though, lol

Ha ha, yeh petrol costs a fortune here - like £50 a tank and i fill up every couple of days!!! Like you say though it's a real head turner so I guess it's worth it! Gets the girls looking!

It's raining (again) today so i'll re set the rockers using the timing mark that the timing light showed up and see how it goes.

Thats a pretty cool build up your doing... bet you can't wait to hear it running!

Thanks for the advice, i'll post again and let you know how it goes...

Do you have stud mount rockers?

No need to worry about timing when setting stud mount rockers, just need to make sure
you are on the cam base circle, you can do that just by watching the valves open and close.
Do the intake rocker when the exhaust valve just starts to open and
do the exhaust rocker when the intake valve is almost closed after going thru open and shutting cycle

Btw: for you who dont know how much 50 pounds is, thats about $80-90 dollars for a tank of gas. OUCH!!!!!!
